Consider Adding Automated Tests to Improve Reliability

Hi team,

Thanks for building such a great Just Manager!

I've noticed a few minor issues while using it. For a file manager, reliability and stability are critical, since it performs many operations on real files.

Quick question first: are you currently using any static analysis tools, such as Cppcheck, Clang-Tidy, or "cl /analyze"? If so, that's great—automated tests would complement them nicely. If not, they might be worth considering too. Either way, runtime tests would still be valuable for things static analysis can't cover, such as reading/writing settings, path parsing, file-operation edge cases, and the FTP state machine.

With that in mind, would you consider adding some lightweight automated tests? Given the project's size, doctest might be a good fit: it's header-only, compiles quickly, has a small footprint, and has a low learning curve. If the project is already on C++20, snitch could also be worth a look—it's even lighter and cleaner. And if you ever want to run C++ tests alongside Python tests with a single command, pytest-cpp can pick up and execute more tests. Tests could first cover the high-risk areas above, establishing a basic regression safety net that can then be expanded gradually.

Just a suggestion—hope it helps. Thanks again for all your continued work on this project!

Re: Consider Adding Automated Tests to Improve Reliability

Hello,

Yes, I use cppcheck.
As for the unit tests, I create them to check individual functions, there’s no full coverage.
I thought about functional auto tests that could be created, for example, with AutoIt. Mentioned here.
However, I don’t have time to write the tests, as most of my time is spent implementing new features, fixing bugs, etc.

Re: Consider Adding Automated Tests to Improve Reliability

Thanks for the detailed reply—and for taking the time to explain. That all makes sense. I completely understand that new features and bug fixes come first, and that test writing often gets pushed down the list. No pressure at all.

AutoIt can be useful for UI-level functional tests, but for core logic, C++ tests are usually easier to run in CI and maintain.
